The Opening of Artifacts Aired - 6/6/2012

The opening of Artifacts Aired went well. Our hard work paid off and everyone enjoyed a great show.

We even had a cinematic experience. The interviews with the artists were displayed for the vistors that wanted to know more about the artifacts.

Linda Swinfield the MC for the nights events.

Matthew Tome spoke about the course that we are participating in (Museum Practices Cert. IV).

Julie Baird, deputy director of Newcastle Regional Museum officially opened Artifacts Aired.

John Barrett (far right) thanked all who participated in the show.

The group from Artifacts Aired offered flowers and wine to the guest speakers (Julie Baird (above), Linda Swinfied and Matthew Tome).

Artifacts Aired Colouring Competition

If you're planning a visit to the Front Room Gallery over the next couple of weeks, be sure to enter our colouring in competition and become a part of our exhibition! We have 3 fantastic prizes to give away (for kids and art students alike), so be sure to leave your name and contact information on the back and judging will take place on Friday 22 June, 2012.

The image on our colouring sheet is inspired by one of our exhibits, Gareth Sansom's DESTRUKTION, from the collection of Michael Bell and Claire Martin.

Gareth Sansom, DESTRUKTION, 1995, 90 x 120cm, from the collection of Michael Bell & Claire Martin

Gareth Sansom is an Australian artist and a major contributor to the Australian art scene since the mid 1960s, introducing new themes and being one of the first Australian artists to be influenced by Pop art. This etching was produced at the Australian Print Workshop (APW) in Melbourne - Australia's leading printmaking institution, and is a very exciting piece for us to be able to exhibit in our collection of collections.

Day 2 of Installing

Our 2nd day of installing was quite eventful. We were challenged with issues of placement and where objects would look most effective. But we resolved those problems by working together.

For the fragile objects, we had organised glass casses to protect them from harm.

One of the larger exhibits was set up today. These objects are old projectors donated by Neil Mansfield

The group continued to hang the rest of the objects. These pieces worked well against the feature wall.

The beginnings of the children's corner.

Julie Baird (Dept. Director of Newcastle Regional Museum) visited us at the gallery today. She was invited in to look at what we had accomplished as a group and how our show was coming along. Julie was informed of the collectors taking part and their reasons behind the objects.

At the end of the day, we cleaned up the gallery. We removed the ladder, tool boxes and bubble wrap. this way we could see what the gallery/museum would look like for tomorrow night.

We still have a few things to complete tomorrow, but it is great to see how far we have come together as a group and co-workers.
